Antonello da Messina Gothic Window Art Detail Wood Earrings

A pair of art earrings inspired by the central triforate window of Saint Jerome in His Study by Antonello da Messina — painted around 1474–75 and now housed at the National Gallery in London. The design captures the two Gothic arched openings set directly above the Saint’s wooden study, at the centre of the magnificent stone structure. Through them, an intense turquoise sky is visible — and if you look closely, the dark silhouettes of small birds in flight. In Renaissance painting, birds soaring beyond the walls of a scholar’s study are never incidental: they represent the mind of the wise man, elevated through knowledge and contemplation, freed from earthly constraints. Antonello uses these windows as natural light sources, their deep blue contrasting dramatically with the grey stone penumbra of the Gothic interior — a rigorous geometric grid that anticipates centuries of modern design.

Entirely handmade in our studio in Granada, Spain, from sustainable wood sourced from FSC-certified suppliers. Please note that while the raw material comes from FSC-certified sources, the finished piece is not itself an FSC-certified product. With 925 sterling silver hooks and a weight of just 6 grams, these earrings are exceptionally lightweight — designed to be worn all day without discomfort.
