This large statement wood brooch features an intense, penetrating eye detail from Portrait of a Man (c. 1475) by Antonello da Messina, one of the most influential painters of the Italian Renaissance, celebrated for introducing Flemish oil painting technique to Italy. Handcrafted in my studio in Granada, Spain, each brooch is individually cut and assembled by hand from sustainable wood, making every piece subtly unique wearable art.
When you wear this piece you are also engaging with an important development in the history of art — Antonello da Messina was credited with bringing the newly established technique of painting with oils from the Flemish tradition to the Italian Renaissance. The base is crafted using sustainable wood sourced from FSC-certified suppliers, aligning with a commitment to responsible production and the preservation of the planet. By selecting this piece, you support sustainable trade and traditional atelier craftsmanship.
This brooch measures 6.5cm x 6.5cm x back covered with soft black felt. Pin back in silver-plated steel with locking bar, lead and nickel free. Rain and atmospheric humidity do not present a problem, but avoid showers, baths, swimming pools, and the sea. The brooch arrives enclosed in handmade sustainable packaging made with FSC-certified paper, created exclusively by myself.
