A pair of mismatched art earrings featuring the magnificent merchant ship from Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, traditionally attributed to Pieter Bruegel the Elder and housed at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.
This painting is one of the most celebrated paradoxes in art history: the title speaks of the fall of Icarus, yet Icarus is almost invisible — a pair of legs disappearing beneath the waves in the lower right corner, unnoticed by the ploughman, the shepherd, and the great ship sailing serenely past with its sails full of wind. Bruegel’s message, drawn from an old Flemish proverb, is quietly devastating: no plough stops for a dying man. Life — commerce, nature, the sea — moves on, indifferent to individual tragedy or the hubris of those who fly too close to the sun. The ship you wear on these earrings is that indifference made beautiful: white sails against deep Flemish green, continuing its voyage with perfect, unhurried grace.
Entirely handmade in our studio in Granada, Spain, from sustainable wood sourced from FSC-certified suppliers. Please note that while the raw material comes from FSC-certified sources, the finished piece is not itself an FSC-certified product. With 925 sterling silver hooks and a weight of just 6 grams, these earrings are exceptionally lightweight — designed to be worn all day without discomfort. The reverse side is black, revealing the natural grain of the wood.
Dimensions: each earring is approximately 3.5 cm x 4 cm. A perfect museum-inspired gift for those drawn to Flemish painting, maritime history, mythology, and objects that start a conversation.
Every order arrives in plastic-free, eco-friendly packaging personally designed in our studio, including a brief history of the artwork.
