The central panel captures a massive wagon of hay surrounded by a chaotic humanity entirely consumed by sin and folly, while Christ watches from above next to a praying angel, unnoticed by the oblivious crowd. The right panel portrays the terrifying descent into Hell as demonic beings draw the wagon away, completing Bosch’s powerful moral allegory. When closed, the exterior wings reveal a beautifully painted landscape with a lone traveller — a profound meditation on life’s journey.
